Perez’s Pinch Double in 10th Drops Dodgers Into Last Place, 4-3

United Press International

Pinch-hitter Tony Perez doubled with two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning Wednesday to rally the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-3 victory over the Dodgers.

It was the sixth straight loss for the Dodgers, who tumbled into last place in the National League West. The Reds moved out of the cellar for the first time since April 26.

John Franco (2-4) pitched the final 2 innings for the victory, despite allowing the Dodgers to take the lead in the top of the 10th.

Buddy Bell opened the 10th with a single off Ed Vande Berg (1-4) and was sacrificed to second by Ron Oester, who was safe at first when Vande Berg fielded the bunt and unsuccessfully tried to throw out Bell at second. After pinch hitter Wade Rowdon struck out, Tracy Jones was safe at first on an error by shortstop Bill Russell, loading the bases. Perez, batting for Pete Rose, slammed a double to right-center. The ball bounced off the outstretched glove of right fielder Mike Marshall, enabling pinch-runner Kal Daniels and Oester to score.

Ken Landreaux’s single with two out in the top of the 10th drove home Alex Trevino from third base to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead. Trevino opened the inning with a single off Franco, and took second on a sacrifice by Russell. Trevino moved to third on a ground out by pinch-hitter Enos Cabell before scoring when Landreaux punched a single between shortstop and third.

The Dodgers tied it, 2-2, in the eighth when Steve Sax singled off Ron Robinson, stole second and scored on Landreaux’s single up the middle.

Los Angeles pulled within 2-1 in the seventh. Len Matuszek doubled off the center-field wall and Trevino walked. Pinch-hitter Russell, batting for Craig Shipley, then singled to right to score Matuszek. Trevino, who raced to third on right fielder Dave Parker’s throw home, tried to score when catcher Bo Diaz threw behind Russell at first, but was out easily at the plate on first baseman Rose’s return throw home.

The Reds took a 1-0 lead in the second when Dave Concepcion singled off Alejandro Pena, took second on a balk and scored on a single by Bell.

Cincinnati improved the lead to 2-0 in the sixth when starting pitcher Bill Gullickson singled, moved to second on a single by Rose and scored when Parker lined a single off the glove of leaping first baseman Matuszek.
