Zapf Extends Lead in Power-Boat Series

SAN DIEGO — Rod Zapf, the leader of the California Championship Series for Formula 6 Litre inboard hydroplane boats, extended his lead Saturday with a victory on the five-mile course on Mission Bay.
Zapf, from Manhattan Beach, beat Lakeside’s Jim Squire by five seconds to take Saturday’s feature race. Mike Wilson of Orange came in third.
In the 2 1/2 Litre Stock boat race Dave Sammons of Carlsbad was second to Palos Verdes’ Jim Bald. Kevin Aylesworth of San Diego finished third. Aylesworth also finished third in the 2 1/2 Litre Modified race just ahead of Santee’s John Church.
Power-boat racing continues today on Mission Bay. The event is the third race of the five-leg California championship series.
