Southern Section Winners Set for Meet
Several Valley-area track and field champions will compete Friday in the Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The top five finishers in each event Friday qualify for the state championships, June 6-7 at Cerritos.
Competing Southern Section champions from the Valley-area are Jim Zimmer of Simi Valley (1,600 meters), Rodney Bradshaw of Saugus (110-meter high hurdles), Dennis O’Sullivan of Alemany (800 meters), and Erich Reinhart of Notre Dame (pole vault).
The leading girls competitors are sprinter Angela Burnham of Rio Mesa, distance-runner Melissa Sutton of Newbury Park, hurdler-triple-jumper Sharon Manship of Thousand Oaks and middle-distance runner Desiree Joubert of Westlake.
Sepulveda Pair Reaches Nationals
Sepulveda’s Doug Glatt and Larry Morefield won the Memorial Day Four-Wall doubles handball tournament in San Francisco. Glatt and Morefield defeated Larry Smith and Larry Fisher in the final, 21-5, 21-2.
The pair is scheduled to participate in the National Handball Championships, June 13-21 in Houston.
College of the Canyons outfielder Chris Cota has signed a contract to play for the Chicago White Sox.
Cota, 6-1, 185 pounds, batted .328 with 6 home runs and 13 stolen bases in the regular season. Canyons Coach Mike Gillespie believes Cota possesses an arm that is as good, or better, than any major league outfielder. Cota, a sophomore from Saugus High, scored the game-winning run in Canyons’ 7-5 win over Rancho Santiago in the state championship game Monday.
Canyons catcher Pete Kuld, who batted .376 and broke a school record for most home runs in a season (17), declined to sign with the White Sox. Instead, Kuld is headed for Pepperdine on a baseball scholarship.
Right-handed pitcher Frank Halcovich, the two-time junior college player of the year, declined to sign with the Kansas City Royals. Halcovich, 15-0 with Canyons this season, has signed a national letter of intent with Arizona.
