Tennis Roundup : Rosewall Beats Fraser at UCLA, 6-2, 6-2

Ken Rosewall defeated Neale Fraser, 6-2, 6-2, Friday night in a battle of former Australian stars during the Grand Masters tournament at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the UCLA campus.
In another first-round singles match, Australian Fred Stolle beat Ramanthan Krishnan of India, 6-3, 6-4.
Today’s schedule pits Mal Anderson of Australia against Andres Gimeno of Spain and Marty Mulligan of Australia opposite another Aussie, Rod Laver. The first match begins at 1 p.m.
The tournament continues through Monday night, when the final will be played at 7 p.m.
Stefan Edberg of Sweden, seeded No. 2 in the rain-plagued $325,000 Volvo Monte Carlo Open, had to struggle for two days on three courts to overcome West Germany’s Andreas Maurer, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Play has been continuing, slowly, on the only covered court at the Monte Carlo Country Club.
The Edberg-Maurer match started Thursday on the main court before being suspended because of afternoon rain. Early Friday, they continued the match on an outside court when the rain eased momentarily, only to chase them indoors again. Finally, late Friday, they finished on the covered court.
In other third-round matches, top-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden beat Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia, 6-1, 5-4, France’s Yannick Noah beat Horacio De La Pena of Argentina, 6-3, 6-3, and Spain’s Fernando Luna upset Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Joakim Nystrom of Sweden defeated Tarik Benhabiles of France, 6-1, 6-2; Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland beat Aaron Krickstein, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Andres Gomez of Ecuador beat Martin Jaite of Argentina, 6-3, 6-2.
