The Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce entered into a three-year sponsorship agreement Tuesday with Nissan Motor Corp. that will guarantee network television coverage of the Los Angeles Open and increase the purse from $450,000 to $600,000. Andrew Robertson, senior trustee of the Junior Chamber of Commerce’s Golf Foundation, also announced that the 1987 tournament will be held Feb. 19-22 at Riviera Country Club.
Robertson said that the Junior Chamber would have preferred to remain independent from a corporate partner for the tournament but that “reality was a factor.”
He mentioned the prospects for a purse that was competitive with those of other major tournaments, guaranteed network television coverage and Nissan’s availability as a sponsor as the reasons the Junior Chamber had entered into the agreement.
“Our necessity met opportunity,” he said.
