Fifteen awards “honoring architectural and landscaping accomplishments that enhance the beauty and environment” were presented at the 16th annual Beautification Awards luncheon of the Los Angeles West Chamber of Commerce at the Hotel Bel-Air.
Topping the winners were Hughes Aircraft’s headquarters at 7200 Hughes Terrace, in the Westchester area, recipient of the Jeffrey H. Tamkin Award for the outstanding new commercial structure, and Mount St. Mary’s College at 12001 Chalon Road, garnering the chamber’s Landmark Award.
The Century Plaza Hotel Tower at 2045 Avenue of the Stars was the winner in the new high-rise category of commercial buildings, while the host Hotel Bel-Air was selected in the remodeled commercial landscape category.
Winner of the best new mid-rise commercial structure--a new category this year--was the Midway Medical Plaza at 5925 San Vicente Blvd., and another medical facility, the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children at 3160 Geneva St., won as the new public project.
Gerald Weisstein and Dori Pye, chairman of the board and president of the chamber, respectively, and Carl Terzian as master of ceremonies, hosted the annual luncheon which honors architecture and landscaping “from City Hall to the sea.”
Guests included City Council members Marvin Braude, Howard Finn and Zev Yaroslavsky and Donald Axon, president of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Jeffrey H. Tamkin, realty developer, and Dick Turpin, Times real estate editor, were award presenters. Sam Hunter accepted the Tamkin trophy and Barbara Becker, executive director of Mount St. Mary’s College, accepting the Landmark Award.
Contest judges were Tibor Kisvarday, chairman; Liz Bernard, vice chair; Daniel Rosenfeld, Cadillac Fairview Industrial Development Inc., Prof. Samuel Aroni, UCLA Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning; Robert Herrick Carter, landscape architect and architect Herbert Nadel and N. David O’Malley, architect and head of Howard Hughes Development Corp.
