The average salary of 658 major league players on opening-day rosters or the disabled list was $431,521, the highest in team sports, the Player Relations Committee announced.
The total opening-day payroll was $283,941,298, compared with $252,720,818 in 1985. With 693 players on active rosters and disabled lists last year, the average salary was $364,677.
