Former San Mateo policeman Anthony (Jack) Sully was described as a depraved killer driven by lust and cocaine as his trial on six murder charges got under way. But Sully’s attorney said the evidence linking the 41-year-old defendant to the six 1983 killings is not enough to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Douglas Gray also said Sully was merely a businessman who “tragically, stupidly, became part of what seems to be an American epidemic--he started using cocaine.” He said Sully became obsessed with female companionship, which he obtained from an escort service. San Mateo County Assistant Dist. Atty. Tom Stevens told the jury that Sully killed five women and one man who was a procurer.
