Georgia Athletic Scandal Growing
An investigative report given to the Georgia Board of Regents arrived at conclusions similar to those brought out in a lawsuit won by a former school instructor--that the University of Georgia gave preferential treatment to academically deficient student-athletes.
In February, former Georgia instructor Jan Kemp was awarded $2.57 million after a jury ruled she was wrongfully fired by the university for protesting special treatment for athletes. In a report made public in Atlanta Thursday, two university officials were quoted as saying university President Fred Davison knew of the preferential treatment before it became public knowledge in the Kemp case.
Davison, who resigned in protest at the board’s decision to postpone a vote on renewing his contract, denied knowing Georgia athletes were given preferential treatment, saying: “Nothing--nothing--of this nature could be further from the truth.”
