Tax Protester Convicted of Failing to File State Returns for 3 Years

A jury deliberated only 15 minutes Thursday before it found a Santa Ana woman guilty of failing to file her state income tax returns, a state Franchise Tax Board spokeswoman said.
Mary Ann Hector, 51, a former member of the Garden Grove-based tax protest group Your Heritage Protection Assn., was convicted of three misdemeanor counts of failing to file her 1981, 1982 and 1983 tax returns on $102,000 in wages, said Rose Richter, tax board spokeswoman.
Orange County Municipal Judge Richard W. Stanford Jr. set a May 7 sentencing date. Hector faces a maximum sentence of three years in jail and a fine of $7,000.
The Garden Grove tax group claimed that income taxes are unconstitutional and urged its members not to file tax returns.
