Both sides said an agreement was near, while the debt-ridden company asked creditors to extend their default deadline in light of the planned takeover by Texas Air Corp. An Eastern Airlines spokesman said negotiations between representatives of the flight attendants and Eastern management were continuing. He said he believed that face-to-face talks had occurred, along with individual meetings with federal mediators. Other Eastern officials were meeting in New York with representatives of some of the airline’s 60 lenders to seek extension of a waiver of default.
