Ventura County Supervisor Will Seek New Term

Ventura County Supervisor James Dougherty, a fiscal conservative who has represented Simi Valley, Moorpark and parts of northern Thousand Oaks since the approval of Proposition 13 in 1978, said Wednesday he will seek a third term on the Board of Supervisors.
Dougherty is now chairman of the five-person, nonpartisan board.
He is, as yet, unopposed, and would win a third term with a vote of more than 50% in the June 3 primary election.
The 51-year-old Democrat was first elected in 1978 as a strong supporter of Proposition 13, a measure that has induced local governments to tighten their belts in response to curbs on property taxes.
Over the last 10 years, Dougherty said, county expenditures--now at about $350 million annually--have risen only 7% while population jumped by 34% to just over 600,000 residents.
