The addition of Jim Fenwick to the football staff at Cal State Northridge was confirmed Friday by Bob Hiegert, CSUN athletic director.
“Jim is a respected young football coach and an excellent addition to our staff,” Hiegert said.
Hiegert said that Fenwick’s presence would enhance recruiting efforts in the Valley. “He has an excellent reputation among high school and junior college coaches,” Hiegert said.
Fenwick, football coach at Pierce College for the past five years, will be the coach of running backs at Northridge. Fenwick submitted his resignation in a note dated Feb. 5, according to Dave Wolf, Pierce College president. Fenwick will continue to teach physical education at Pierce.
A successor to Fenwick will not be named until the Los Angeles Community College District determines the fate of its faculty, Wolf said. The district Friday began sending layoff notices to 39 full-time physical education instructors.
“We are several weeks away from having sufficient information as to the consequences of the district’s action,” Wolf said. “It would be foolish to reach conclusions about the future of the football program at this time.”
Wolf said that Fenwick’s successor would most likely come from within the district.
“The possibility of making a hire from outside the district is very, very remote,” he said.
