WASHINGTON — Rep. John E. Grotberg (R-Ill.), who has been receiving experimental cancer chemotherapy, has been in a coma since emergency surgery last Monday and remains in critical condition, the congressman’s office said today.
A statement attributed to a doctor at the National Cancer Institute said the 60-year-old, first-term congressman is breathing with the aid of a respirator and has been unconscious since complications arose from surgery to correct an arterial problem.
“The chances for recovery are not known at this time,” the statement said.
Grotberg, who lives in St. Charles, Ill., has a long history of cancer, which has been diagnosed in his liver and colon.
