Chicago State Extends USIU’s Losing Streak

SAN DIEGO — The United States International University basketball team appeared on the verge of breaking its five-game losing streak Thursday, but that was before it broke down in the second half and fell to Chicago State, 110-87, in a game at Southwestern College.
The Gulls led, 45-41, at the half, but Chicago State rallied to take a 49-47 lead on a Fred Shephard layup with 17:44 to play. Chicago State, which shot 64.9% from the floor in the second half, led the rest of the way.
Chicago State (16-6) was led by Darron Brittman, who had 25 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 steals. Former Morse High School standout Shawn Bell added 23 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocked shots.
USIU (7-11), which shot only 39.5% during its second-half collapse, was led by Joe Yezbak with 31 points. Charles Redding, an All-County guard while at Point Loma High, added 18 points.
The Gulls play Pan American at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Southwestern College.
