Karen Rae Quick, Karen Goodman and Ferne Ackerman were presented Vanguard Awards for outstanding choreography by the Los Angeles Area Dance Alliance on Sunday.
The winners all performed their works at last summer’s Dance Kaleidoscope. Quick won the solo category for “Hay Una Mujer Desaparecida,” Goodman was honored for innovation with “Hard Feelings” and Ackerman for group choreography in “Biko,” which received its premiere by her company Big Flood.
Judith Stark, founder of the awards, handed out the $500 cash prizes in honor of the late dance and art patron Robert Houston at Wattles House in Hollywood. Judges were Christina Schlundt, Aaron Paley and Charles S. Dubin.
