Girls’ Roundup : Bethune’s Only Basket Beats Estancia, 42-40

Tammy Bethune of Santa Ana Valley picked an opportune time to score her only basket of a consolation semifinal game against Estancia in the Costa Mesa Tournament.

Bethune scored with 14 seconds to play, breaking a tie and giving the Falcons a 42-40 victory over the Eagles.

Cathy Smith and Rosalin Crain led the Falcons with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Estancia’s Annie Foley led all scorers with 17.

Santa Ana Valley (4-1) meets Costa Mesa at 3 p.m. Saturday for the consolation championship. Estancia’s record fell to 2-6.

In other Costa Mesa Tournament action:

Costa Mesa 51, El Modena 42--Stephanie Swanson and Suzanne Cowley scored 13 points apiece to lead the Mustangs to this consolation semifinal victory. Barbie Olson and Shelly Montgomery scored 11 points each for the Vanguards. Costa Mesa (4-5) advances to the consolation championship. El Modena (3-5) is out of the tournament.

Cerritos 57, Tustin 47--Roberta Perry scored 20 points to lead the Dons to a victory in the fifth-place semifinals. Ann Jeffries, Tricia Andres and Joy Fuller scored 8 points apiece for the Tillers. Cerritos meets Garden Grove for fifth place Saturday.

Garden Grove 43, North Torrance 40 (OT)--Sue Barton sank two free throws with 10 seconds to play to assure the Argonauts a win in this fifth-place semifinal game. Garden Grove advances to meet Cerritos for fifth place Saturday.

Compton 57, South Torrance 32--Sonja Bracker scored 21 points to help the Tarbabes advance to Saturday’s final against Chino. Mandy Hannah scored 18 points for South Torrance.

Chino 74, Shurr 54--Stephanie Dykstra scored 31 points and Candida Echeverria added 22 to lead the Cowboys into the final against Compton. Jennifer Okuno scored 18 points for Shurr.

In the Cypress Tournament:

Ocean View 56, Long Beach Millikan 55--The Seahawks ran out the clock at the end of the game to prevent the Rams from overtaking them in a quarterfinal game.

Dana Douty set a CIF Southern Section career assist mark with four against the Rams. She has 654, which breaks the old standard of 651, set by Charisse Bremond of Inglewood.

Douty also had 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals to help the Seahawks. Trina Vlachos led the Ocean View with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 3 steals.

Ocean View (7-4) meets Huntington Beach tonight in a semifinal game. Millikan fell to 9-2.

Huntington Beach 57, Westminster 56--The Oilers hung on for the win when the Lions couldn’t get a shot off at the end of the game. Stephanie Pemper led the Oilers with 20 points. Jeannine Battaglia and Devon Akita scored 19 points apiece for the Lions. Huntington Beach improved its record to 8-4.

Cypress 39, Pacifica 7--Michelle Brooks scored 10 points to lead the Centurions to the win. Cypress meets Magnolia at 12:30 p.m. Friday in a consolation semifinal game.

Magnolia 57, Loara 47--Michelle Carter scored 21 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, blocked 8 shots and had 4 assists to lead the Sentinels to the win. Dawn Borum added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Sentinels. Magnolia improved its record to 7-3; Loara fell to 3-7.

Foothill 65, Long Beach Jordan 21--Becky Sullivan scored 12 points to lead the Knights to the easy win. Foothill meets Fountain Valley Friday in a rematch of the final of last week’s Marina Tournament, won by Foothill. The Knights are 8-1.

Warren 41, Kennedy 30--Misty Spilotro led the Bears to the win with 21 points. Ursula Loveley scored 12 points for the Fighting Irish. Kennedy’s record fell to 2-7.
