Saying San Diego’s “moderate and conservative voters will lose their representation in the mayor’s office” if he is not a candidate, acting Mayor Ed Struiksma announced he will enter the Feb. 25 special mayoral primary. Struiksma had been criticized by fellow conservative Republicans on the City Council who said he had assured them that he would not be a candidate for mayor when he was elected deputy mayor before Roger Hedgecock was forced to resign last month because of felony convictions related to campaign funds. Struiksma dismissed the statements by several council members that he should step down as acting mayor.
