Brazil Bans Whale Hunts off Coast

BRASILIA, Brazil — President Jose Sarney Friday banned whale hunting off Brazil’s coast for five years after a letter campaign by thousands of children.
The decree takes effect Jan. 1. Navy Minister Enrique Saboya said that 598 whales were killed off Brazil in 1985.
