Marvin Webster Quits Basketball

Marvin Webster, the New York Knicks’ 7-1 center, announced Wednesday that he was retiring from basketball to enter business. Webster, who has been sidelined because of recurring hepatitis, cited his health as a reason for his retirement.

Webster, 33, has had hepatitis since he was a teen-ager. He has recovered from this latest bout but has not played or attended practices. He has not been in a game since the 1983-84 season. Webster’s estimated salary is $450,000 a year. He will be paid in full.
