A federal grand jury in San Diego Wednesday indicted two San Francisco-area men on cocaine possession and drug smuggling charges.
Dennis Dominic Velez, 33, and Gustavo Carrillo Zarate, 27, were charged with seven counts involving an attempt to carry about 18 pounds of cocaine--valued at $5.25 million--from Mexico through the San Ysidro checkpoint at the international border, court records show.
The men allegedly tried to smuggle the drugs by concealing them in the trunk of their car, the indictment said. The car held cocaine in 13 packages, which were initialed for intended customers and distributors, the U.S. attorney’s office said Wednesday.
