THE BLEEP WORD
After being charmed by “Foxfire” and thoroughly entertained by “Berlin to Broadway” (at the Zephyr Theatre), I cannot describe our disgust and displeasure with “Glengarry Glen Ross” (“ ‘Glengarry’ Takes Care of Business,” by Dan Sullivan, Nov. 29).
Can you please tell me what the nature of my communication would be if I wrote to you: (And here the letter writer employed a rather well-worn Anglo-Saxon vulgarism, the word bleep, about 20 times in one sentence).
Every character, every minute of the play had nothing to say but this stupid, stupid word. How in the world can a theatergoer care about those people? How in the world could your theater reviewer find a “message” and a “meaning” in this meaningless play? How can a play, without language, win such acclaim?
I know you cannot print this letter--which only makes me wonder how this play ever got produced.
