Downey

The Downey Unified School District has approved funds for 30 proposals for the district’s Classroom Teacher Instructional Improvement Program. The district received $53,000 this year from the state Department of Education for the CTIIP proposals, which provide up to $2,000 per teacher for innovative ideas that improve teaching.

Edward Potter, director of special programs, said the district received 85 proposals, double the amount received last year. Approximately $6,000 was left over from 1984-85, the first school year of the program, bringing the total monies available to $59,000.

The proposals--which this year include classes for yearbook production for elementary students, microwave cooking for middle school students and computer enriched accounting for high school students--are restricted to full-tenured teachers who must spend the majority of their time in the classroom.
