JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Six people were killed and 21 arrested in riots across South Africa today as armed soldiers evicted 900 black student nurses from Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest hospital, which is threatened with a strike.
National police headquarters said four of the deaths occurred in Leandra, near Johannesburg, in a confrontation over the threatened eviction of black squatters. Police said officers killed one man when they opened fire near Queenstown, a farming center in eastern Cape Province, where the burned body of a black man also was found.
