Robert P. Mandic Jr., a seven-year City Council member and manager of his father’s local auto body and towing shop, was narrowly elected mayor Monday night.
In their annual ritual of choosing a new mayor from their ranks, council members voted 4 to 3 in favor of Mandic. Council members Jack Kelly, Don MacAllister and John Thomas voted against the selection.
Mandic, 44, who was mayor in 1982, replaces Councilwoman Ruth Bailey.
He said his priorities for the next year include downtown redevelopment, ground-breaking for the city’s main pier and flood prevention in the Talbert Channel.
The council also elected Councilwoman Ruth Finley, 62, mayor pro tem on a 6-1 vote.
