Beirut Postal Protest Further Isolates City

BEIRUT — A strike by Lebanese postal workers to protest the kidnaping of several of their colleagues cut off most communications between Lebanon and the outside world Wednesday.
The striking technicians “locked up the main cable room, took the keys and went home,” a post office official said.
“It seems they unplugged most of the cable links before going home yesterday,” the official said. “There is nothing we can do until they get back.”
The break affected the main communication wires used by such international news agencies as the Associated Press, United Press International and Reuters. These news outlets do, however, have some telephone access to their home offices.
