Five years after the idea was first proposed, the Long Beach City Council gave final approval Tuesday to a $82-million trash-to-energy plant. The council voted unanimously to award the construction project to Pittsburg-based Dravco Corp., which will begin building the plant later this year on 17 acres adjacent to Henry Ford Avenue and New Dock Street on Terminal Island.
“I think this is one of the most exciting things we’ve done in years in this community,” Councilman Marc Wilder said.
The plant will be able to handle more than 600 tons of garbage produced by city residents each day. The trash will be burned, heating boilers to create steam which will turn generators to produce electricity.
