About 1,950 homes and businesses in a one-square-mile area of Santa Ana were without power for at least 53 minutes Tuesday night when a failure occurred in the underground system outside a Southern California Edison Co. substation, a company spokesman said.
The cause of the 7:57 p.m. failure at 1st and Sullivan streets is not known, said spokesman Gene Carter. Power was restored to about 1,000 customers by 8:50 p.m., and the rest had their lights back at 9:08 p.m., he said.
The affected area was between Harbor Boulevard and Fairview Street, bordered by 5th Street on the north and McFadden Avenue on the south, Carter said.
Police said the blackout created some traffic snarls but no accidents.
