Broodmare Sold for $7 Million

Miss Oceana, in foal to Northern Dancer, sold for a world-record $7 million Sunday during the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall-Mixed Sales at Lexington, Ky.
Financier Carl Icahn purchased the 4-year-old with stakes winnings of $1,010,358. The previous record for a broodmare was $6 million, set at Fasig-Tipton last year for Priceless Fame, in foal to Seattle Slew.
Miss Oceana, by Alydar out of Sea-Bird, won 11 of 19 races as a 2- and 3-year-old, including six Grade I stakes races. She was trained by Woody Stephens and is in foal for the first time.
Northern Dancer won the 1964 Kentucky Derby and has produced 115 stakes winners.
Forty-two horses were sold as part of the Newstead Farm dispersal for a total of $37,186,000, an average of $885,380 per head. A total of 21 stallion shares were sold for $9,807,000, an average of $467,000 a share.
