Garthorn, ridden by Rafael Meza, won the $268,200 Budweiser-Hawthorne Gold Cup by five lengths in the 49th running of the race at Hawthorne Race Course.
Garthorn, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry S. Moss of Los Angeles, easily led Magic North home in the 1-mile race run on a rainy, lighted course. Leroy S. was third, 10 lengths back.
Garthorn was the third horse trained by Robert Frankel to win the race. Frankel, based in California, saddled Water Bank in 1983 and Proof last year.
Garthorn is a five-year-old son of Believe It, also the sire of Proof. Garthorn raced in France before making his U.S. debut at Belmont Park last September.
The winner carried 116 pounds and was timed in 2:01 4/5. Semillero, the second favorite at 3-1, did not threaten in the 10-horse field and finished eighth.
