Girls Volleyball Playoffs : Foley, Whiting Lead Laguna Beach to Win

Valerie Foley had 13 kills and Wendy Whiting added 12 kills Thursday night to help the Laguna Beach High School girls volleyball team to a 15-7, 15-9, 15-7 victory over Lynwood in the first round of the Southern Section 5-A playoffs in the Artists’ gym.

Laguna Beach, which finished second in the Sea View League behind Newport Harbor, improves to 11-4 and will meet Hueneme, a winner over Bishop Montgomery Thursday night, in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

In other 5-A action:

Newport Harbor 3, Redondo 0--Senior Lara Asper had 13 blocks and Tracy Krueger had 11 kills to help the second-seeded Sailors to a 15-1, 15-1, 15-6, win over the Sea Hawks at Newport Harbor. Laura Power added 10 kills for the Sailors.

Mater Dei 3, Corona del Mar 0--The Monarchs, who finished second in the Angelus League behind St. Joseph of Lakewood, defeated the Sea Kings, 15-9, 15-4, 15-12, at Mater Dei. Cyndy Kuhter had seven kills and Carrie Sullivan had six kills and three blocks to help the Monarchs improve to 14-1. Mater Dei must face top-ranked Mira Costa in the quarterfinals.

Woodbridge 3, Gahr 0--The Warriors finished third in the Sea View League but were able to eliminate the San Gabriel Valley League-champion Gladiators, 15-4, 15-13, 15-12, at Gahr High in Cerritos.

In 4-A action:

Edison 3, Foothill 1--Senior outside hitter Pam Lance had 24 kills and 7 blocks to lead the Chargers to an upset win over the Knights, 13-15, 15-13, 15-2, 15-7, at Foothill. The Knights, champions of the Century League, entered with a 15-0 record.

Setter Jody Dominic had 28 assists to help Edison improve to 10-7. The Chargers, who finished third in the Sunset League, will meet El Toro in the second round.

Cypress 3, Tustin 2--Kaye Kirkham had 11 kills to lead the Centurions to a 12-15, 10-15, 15-8, 15-12, 15-8, come-from-behind victory over the Tillers at Cypress. Stephanie Faris added eight kills for the Centurions, who improve to 16-1. Cypress’ only loss was to Esperanza.

Esperanza 3, Inglewood 0--Sharon Warmus had 11 kills and Laura Jones had 8 kills to help the Aztecs defeat the Sentinels, 15-5, 15-11, 15-4, at Esperanza. Gina Pachiano also had seven service aces to help the Empire League-champion Aztecs improve to 18-2.

Fountain Valley 3, Dana Hills 0--Jackie Cook had 18 kills and Stephanie Snyder had 37 assists and 8 kills to lead the second-seeded Barons (12-3) past the Dolphins, 15-9, 15-9, 15-3, at Fountain Valley.

Long Beach Jordan 3, La Quinta 0--The Panthers defeated the Aztecs, 15-8, 15-9, 15-12, behind the play of 6-3 junior Keba Phipps. Stephanie Messner had eight kills for La Quinta.

Huntington Beach 3, San Clemente 1--The Oilers, who finished second in the Sunset League, defeated the Tritons, 11-15, 15-2, 15-10, 15-10, at Huntington Beach. The Oilers will meet Long Beach Jordan in the second round.

Torrance 3, Bolsa Grande 0--The third-seeded Tarters easily eliminated the Matadors, 15-1, 15-7, 16-14, at Torrance to advance to the second round, where they will meet Cypress.

El Toro 3, Lakewood 0--The South Coast League-champion Chargers defeated the Lancers, 15-5, 15-8, 15-10, at El Toro. The Chargers will play Edison in the second round.

Garden Grove 3, El Dorado 0--The Argonauts, champions of the Garden Grove League, defeated the Golden Hawks, 15-12, 15-7, 15-0, at Garden Grove. El Dorado was a wild-card entrant into the first round.

In 2-A action:

Anaheim 3, St. Bernard 1--The Colonists needed four games to eliminate the Vikings at St. Bernard High in Playa del Ray. Anaheim will meet fourth-seeded Royal in the second round Saturday.

Magnolia 3, Corona 0--The Sentinels, champions of the Orange League, defeated the Panthers, 15-8, 15-10, 15-9, at Magnolia and will meet third-seeded Diamond Bar in the second round.

Upland 3, Valencia 1--The Baseline League-champion Highlanders eliminated the Tigers, 15-0, 15-13, 14-16, 15-9, at Upland High.

In 1-A action:

Southern California Christian 3, Rosary 0--The top-seeded Flames easily defeated the Royalettes, 15-4, 15-2, 15-7, at Southern California Christian to advance to Tuesday’s second round.
