Angered San Mateo Teachers Strike

SAN MATEO, Calif. — Members of the San Mateo Elementary Teachers’ Assn. struck 17 elementary and intermediate schools Friday in anger about a recent school board action connected with contract talks.
Ninety-nine percent of the association’s teachers walked out in reaction to a letter sent to them Thursday by school board President Gerald Boettcher, said association President Roger A. Harris.
Harris said the letter threatened teachers with disciplinary action and cuts in benefits if they strike. However, Boettcher said his letter only outlined the implications of a possible strike. He also called the teacher’s action Friday “unlawful”.
