Bridge Falls in Denver, Worker Dies

DENVER — The 150-foot main concrete and steel span of a bridge being built over Interstate 25 collapsed early today in downtown Denver, killing one worker, injuring four others and blocking the busy eight-lane highway.
The Walnut Street viaduct failed at 2:10 a.m., minutes after construction crews had put in place the last of eight 55-ton steel and concrete girders supporting the main bridge section.
The highway had been closed nightly for the construction work.
The lip of a bridge column on the west side of I-25 failed, dropping all eight girders onto the highway, said Dan Hopkins, spokesman for the Colorado Highway Department.
“Everything was up and that’s when it collapsed,” he said.
