MOSCOW — The resumed ninth game of the World Chess Championship between titlist Anatoly Karpov and challenger Gary Kasparov ended in a draw today after the 53rd move, bringing the score in the match to 5-4 in Karpov’s favor.
The draw was agreed to after Kasparov, playing white, began the resumed portion of the game with what grandmasters described as “a brilliant continuation,” one apparently not anticipated by Karpov.
