Woodbridge High School held off a late Laguna Hills rally Thursday night to record a 7-0 nonleague victory in Irvine Stadium.
The only score came with 5:13 left in the first quarter when the Warriors’ Dave Townsend ran it in from 11 yards. Townsend finished as the game’s leading rusher with 49 yards on 10 carries.
The game marked the debut of Hawk Coach Paul Weinberger, who replaced Ed Adams at Laguna Hills on the second day of fall drills. Adams left the school to become the dean of students at El Toro.
Weinberger saw his team lose despite holding a 114-62 advantage in total offensive yards. Laguna Hills had two excellent scoring chances in the final quarter, but critical mistakes ended the Hawks’ hopes of gaining a tie.
Helm completed 7 of 18 passes for 85 yards and no interceptions while Woodbridge’s John Yurkovich failed to complete as pass on six attempts and was intercepted once.
