Guerrilla Attacks in Philippines Kill 16

MANILA — At least 16 people have been killed in a series of rebel attacks in the northern and southern Philippines over the past three days, military headquarters said Tuesday.
A spokesman said 12 guerrillas of the Communist New People’s Army were killed in a gun battle with soldiers guarding government teams distributing food and medicine in a remote village in northern Cagayan province on Sunday.
In Davao, on the southern island of Mindanao, two militiamen and two civilian volunteers were killed when an anti-rebel patrol was ambushed by New People’s Army guerrillas on Monday, an army officer said.
