HONOLULU — Hurricane Pauline, packing winds gusting up to 105 m.p.h., churned westward toward Hawaii’s largest island Friday, and authorities advised 100,000 people to make emergency preparations.
Forecasters said the storm, with sustained winds of 85 m.p.h., would pass within 50 miles of Hawaii Island tonight if it maintains its present course and speed. A hurricane watch was issued for the island.
