The 1985 Pro Beach Volleyball series continues today as the Miller High Life Orange County Open gets under way at 9 a.m. at Seal Beach Pier.
John Hanley of Santa Barbara and Jon Stevenson of Manhattan Beach are the defending champions in the two-man competition. They finished no lower than second in any event in 1984, but have been less consistent this year, winning two competitions but finishing fifth twice, and recently seventh in the Hermosa Beach Open.
Hanley and Stevenson’s most stringent competition figures to come from Mike Dodd of Manhattan Beach and Tim Hovland of Playa del Rey. Dodd and Hovland won the 1983 event at Seal Beach and have won four titles this year.
Other teams expected to make good showings include Singin Smith--the only three-time Pro Beach Volleyball world champion--and his partner, Randy Stoklos. They have won two tournaments this year.
The Open continues on Sunday, with competition beginning at 8 a.m. and the final scheduled for 3 p.m.
