Mark Murphy, managing editor of the news department at KCBS Channel 2, resigned Tuesday to return to the newspaper industry, a spokeswoman for the station said.
He is joining the New York Times Co. and reportedly will become editor of the Times-owned Spartanburg (S.C.) Herald Journal.
Murphy had been with the CBS-owned station in Los Angeles since March, 1984. He moved into TV after serving as editor of the Hartford (Conn.) Courant for 2 1/2 years. He had spent the previous 18 years at the Los Angeles Times, where he was metropolitan editor from 1971-1981.
