Three airlines asked the DOT to stop a route sale.

American, Eastern and Northwest Orient argued in separate filings with the Transportation Department that the proposed acquisition by United Airlines of Pan American World Airway’s Pacific route system would hurt competition among the domestic airline industry. The transaction would increase United’s routes by 15%, and the three carriers noted that United already is the nation’s largest carrier.
