The number of deaths that may be linked to tainted cheese rose to 44 today as Los Angeles County health officials reported a 50-year-old Burbank woman died over the weekend of the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria infection.
Officials did not know for certain if the woman had eaten Jalisco cheese, but the Listeria outbreak in general has been traced to cheeses from Jalisco Mexican Products Inc. of Artesia. The number of fatalities in Los Angeles County alone now stands at 26, with more than a dozen others as far away as Texas.
