WIMBLEDON, England — John McEnroe opened his defense of the Wimbledon men’s singles tennis title at the All-England club today but played for just 22 minutes before officials suspended his first-round match against Australia’s Peter McNamara because of the slippery court.
With the score on Centre Court standing at 3-3, McEnroe approached the umpire and called for the suspension. When play was put off until Tuesday, the crowd, who had waited patiently in the downpour for 4 1/2 hours, booed and whistled.
