FRESNO — Cerritos College rallied for two runs in the eighth inning and two in the ninth Friday to defeat College of the Canyons, 5-4, in a second-round game in the state community college championship tournament at John Euless Park. Quinn Mack’s bases-loaded single in the ninth won it.
Today at 11 a.m., top-seeded Cerritos (37-5) will play Laney (31-9), an 18-8 winner over Sacramento City Friday, in a battle of the only two remaining unbeaten teams in the double-elimination tournament.
Canyons (29-14) had a 4-1 lead when Craig Worthington got things going for Cerritos with a home run with two out in the bottom of the eighth. It was Worthington’s second home run of the tournament and ninth of the season. Mack’s second of three hits knocked in Cerritos’ other run of the inning.
Pinch-hitter Kevin Evert led off the bottom of the ninth with a 420-foot home run to tie it at 4-4, and then Mack’s hit won it.
