DUBLIN, Ireland — The wreck of a warship from the Spanish Armada sent to invade England in 1588 has been found off the coast of Ireland, the government said Tuesday.
A team of British divers found the wreck, thought to be that of the Juliana, over the weekend buried in sand off the coast of Sligo, in northwest Ireland.
The director of the expedition, Colin Martin of St. Andrews University in Scotland, said the find was one of the most important archeological discoveries of the century.
Three bronze cannons described as being in excellent condition and a cannonball have already been recovered from the wreck, which is now under a preservation order from the Irish Office of Public Works.
