Chris Gobrecht, who compiled an 84-92 record in six seasons as the women’s basketball coach at Cal State Fullerton, Monday was named the coach at the University of Washington.
Under Gobrecht, the Titans were 19-11 in 1984-85 and earned a spot in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament, where they defeated West Texas State and West Virginia before losing to Texas Tech. Fullerton tied San Diego State for fourth in the Western Collegiate Athletic Assn. with an 8-6 record.
Gobrecht replaces Joyce Sake, who resigned after last season to pursue a teaching career at Grossmont College in El Cajon. Sake had a 43-10 record in two years as the Huskies’ coach.
Washington was 26-2 in 1984-85, won the NorPac conference with an 11-0 record and won the conference tournament to receive an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. The Huskies were beaten in the first round by UCLA, 78-62.
Gobrecht played basketball and volleyball at USC before beginning her coaching career at Santa Fe High School. She coached at Pasadena City College before becoming the Fullerton coach in 1979.
