Strong Quake Hits New Guinea

HONOLULU — A major earthquake was recorded today in the New Britain area of New Guinea, U.S. officials said today.
The earthquake was recorded at a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale and was centered about 400 miles northeast of Port Moresby, according to U.S. Geological Survey earthquake monitors in Golden, Colo. A spokesman said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
