An amendment that would divert $95-million worth of work from Japanese shipyards to West Coast ones, such as those in San Diego, was approved Thursday by the House Armed Services Committee, according to U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Coronado), who presented the measure.
The amendment--part of the Defense Authorization Bill --directs the secretary of the Navy to transfer at least half of the ship repair work scheduled for fiscal years 1986-88 to U.S. shipyards. The measure will help “protect American jobs . . . by buttressing our strategic West Coast shipbuilding industry,” Hunter said. “San Diego shipyards will perform much of this work.”
