WASHINGTON — Without a dissenting vote, the Senate today confirmed Beryl W. Sprinkel as the new chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, even though Sen. William Proxmire (D-Wis.) compared Sprinkel to a “mechanical toy . . . you wind up.”
Proxmire decried Sprinkel’s economic views, saying he and President Reagan are “wrong, ridiculously wrong, laughably wrong” on the impact of huge federal budget deficits on the economy. But, he added, “Mr. Sprinkel is probably the best we can expect from this Administration.”
