Archbishop John Roach was ordered to spend 38 hours in jail after he pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of drunken driving and paid a $445 fine.

Roach, 63, was arrested Feb. 21 after police said his car brushed a wall of a grocery store.

Roach, who heads the St. Paul-Minneapolis Archdiocese and is a former president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, said at a news conference in St. Paul later that he “publicly acknowledged imprudence and bad judgment for operating a car while under the influence of alcohol.”
