Prep Baseball : Sophomore Fertig Gets No-Hitter, Two Wins as Woodbridge Sweeps

Sophomore Mark Fertig pitched a no-hitter in the second game of Woodbridge High School’s doubleheader sweep of San Clemente in a nonleague contest Friday night. Fertig also picked up a win in relief in the first game, won by the Warriors, 9-8, in eight innings.

Behind Fertig, who just missed a perfect game, the Warriors easily defeated the Tritons, 17-0, in the second game.

Fertig, the son of former USC quarterback Craig Fertig, struck out seven batters and allowed only one batter to reach base. That came in the fifth, when shortstop Mike Fox’s throw from the hole pulled the first basemen off the bag.

The Warriors had 20 hits, including four home runs, in back of Fertig in the second game. Mike Ecklund had two homers, including a grand slam in the fifth, and Mike Murphy added a grand slam of his own.

Cam McNee had a three-run shot in the fourth inning for Woodbridge (2-3), which opens Sea View League play Wednesday at Laguna Beach.

In the first game, Fertig came on in relief in the sixth inning and picked up the win when Matt Seymour singled home Mike MacDonald for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

In other nonleague action:

Capistrano Valley Christian 3, Laguna Beach 1--Tim Terrell scored twice and was 2 for 3, leading the host Eagles to the nonleague victory. The Eagles’ pitcher, Pete Gervasi (2-1), stuck out eight, walked two and gave up two runs in seven innings.

Catcher Jay Hawthorne singled in Jamie Helmuth for the Eagles’ first run with two out in the first inning. Terrell scored his runs in the fourth and fifth innings for Capistrano Valley Christian. The Eagles (3-1) outhit the Artists, 8-2.

In Freeway League action:

Sunny Hills 7, Buena Park 5--Senior pitcher Paul Abbott struck out 13 batters en route to stopping the Coyotes in the league opener for both clubs at Sunny Hills. Abbott, a right-hander, scattered six hits in upping his record to 2-1.

Rod Turner was 2 for 3, with an RBI for the Lancers (1-0 in league and 8-2 overall). Troy Brown was 3 for 3, with a double and two singles for the Lancers, who outhit the Coyotes, 8-6.

Buena Park fell to 1-5 and 0-1.

Sonora 12, Fullerton 5--Junior shortstop Rob Stuart was 4 for 4, including a triple and three RBIs to lead the Raiders to the league-opening win at Sonora. Dennis Brakebill was 2 for 3 and knocked in three runs for the Raiders (1-0, 6-4). Sonora scored in every inning but the third and outhit the Indians, 14-9.

The Raiders trailed, 2-1, after the first inning, but a five-run outburst in the bottom of the second gave them the lead for good, 6-2.

The Indians (0-1, 3-3) rallied to within 6-3 but got no closer.

Troy 14, La Habra 1--Warrior pitcher Mike Greer (2-0) struck out nine and walked two in his complete-game, league-opening win at Troy. Chuck Witherspoon hit the game’s first pitch for a homer, accounting for all of the Highlanders’ scoring offense.

The Warriors’ 14-hit attack was paced by Greg Nelson (3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs), John Mash (2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs) and Steve Russel (2 for 4 with three runs scored). Troy improved its overall record to 5-2.

In Garden Grove League action:

La Quinta 8, Los Amigos 1--Steve Hunt pitched four-hit ball for the Aztecs in the league-opening win at La Quinta. Hunt also had five strikeouts for La Quinta (1-0, 7-1). The Aztecs scored four runs in the seventh inning to seal the victory. Los Amigos (0-1, 1-4) scored its run in the sixth.

Santiago 13, Rancho Alamitos 2--Right fielder Harvey Cotton’s three-run home run sparked an 11-run first inning to give the host Cavaliers the league-opening win. Cotton was 4 for 4 and picked up four RBIs to lead the Santiago attack. Eddie Correa was 4 for 4 and Ed Perez 3 for 4 to pace Santiago, which had 15 hits. Correa and Perez had two RBIs apiece. Trinidad Cisneros (1-0) pitched all seven innings for the Cavaliers, giving up just four hits and striking out seven.

In Orange League action:

Western 5, Brea-Olinda 4--Rob Harrison’s three-run double in the fifth inning rallied the Pioneers (1-0, 6-1) in the league opener for both in Glover Stadium at Anaheim. Junior David Tellers (5-0) picked up the win for Western. Tellers had six strikeouts and walked two. Brea fell to 0-1 and 2-7.
